Animali al seguito - Forlì Airport

Useful information

Do not want to separate from your four-legged friend even during the holidays?
Here’s what you need to know for a full-blown flight.

  • Pets are allowed at the airport in accordance with hygiene and safety regulations. In particular, dogs must be kept on a leash with a muzzle, or they must be kept closed in appropriate containers. We also remind you to bring your toilet scoop with you.
  • The pet transport service (dogs, cats and ferrets) is not available on all aircraft and the maximum dimensions on board vary depending on the aircraft used. It is therefore important to inquire in advance with the transport company.
  • At the time of booking it is necessary to inform the Company of the presence of the animal and verify the provisions in force in the State of destination of the flight, in particular as regards vaccinations and necessary documentation.
  • For a journey within national borders, it is sufficient to show the health card, from which you can deduce the vaccinations to which the animal has been subjected.
  • EU Regulation 576/2013 provides that dogs, cats and ferrets that travel abroad for non-commercial reasons, are accompanied by the pet passport, issued at the request of the owner by the ASL veterinarian responsible. An essential requirement to make the passport valid for expatriation is rabies vaccination, since rabies is still present in many foreign countries.
  • Remember that an animal less than 3 months old cannot travel abroad as it has not yet had the rabies vaccine.
  • Check whether additional guarantees are required from the country of destination of the flight.
  • Check for quarantine once you’ve reached your destination.
  • You must take care of your four-legged friend during the flight, keeping it, from the moment of embarkation until disembarkation, constantly in the container.
    On board the aircraft, the carrier must be placed on the ground, at the foot or under your seat, so it cannot travel on seats that may not be occupied, or on your legs.
  • Assistance dogs are taken on board with the passenger. In this case, transport is free of charge, but the presence of the animal must still be indicated when booking your ticket. Guide dogs may only be allowed on board if the passenger is in possession of an official document issued by a certified dog training organisation certifying that the dog is fully trained to drive. The dog must wear the appropriate identification harness and be on a leash; some airlines also require the muzzle.
  • Rodents are never allowed even if regularly booked. Among them we remember: guinea pigs, guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, Japanese squirrels, dancing mice.

Small pets

If you are travelling with a small animal, you should know that:

  • the measurements of the special container (semi-rigid or soft, sturdy, with a waterproof and absorbent bottom and equipped with holes for ventilation) in which the animal is transported must be within the standard dimensions or in any case permitted by the Company: the carrier must allow the animal to stand in a comfortable position, to turn around and crouch;
  • the total weight, including the weight of the cage and the food needed during the journey, must not exceed 8 or 10 kg, depending on the airline you have chosen to travel with;
  • the animal must not give off an unpleasant odour or disturb other passengers, otherwise it will not be accepted on board the aircraft and/or transported in the hold;
  • reservation is compulsory;
  • failure to comply with these provisions and those provided by the Company will result in the animal not boarding the flight.

Large animals

If you are travelling with a large animal, you should know that:

  • transport in the hold is mandatory, which must be pressurized, illuminated and heated;
  • the container must comply with the IATA rules for the transport of the animal in the hold: usually a rigid carrier is used, the shell of which must consist only of glass fibres or rigid plastic; if it is equipped with rollers, these must be removed, if they are retractable, they must be blocked with adhesive tape; any muzzles or leashes must not be inside the carrier and the animal must be able to stand and turn on itself;
  • reservations must be made well in advance;
  • failure to comply with these provisions and those provided by the Company will result in the animal not boarding the flight.
