Unaccompanied minors, children between 4 and 12 years of age (14 years for some carriers) can only travel alone with special assistance and their presence must be declared at the time of booking.

IMPORTANT: Before purchasing the ticket for the unaccompanied minor, check that the airline offers that kind of service and the age limit for receiving it.

This is what you need to know:

  • When making a reservation, specify that the minor will travel unaccompanied;
  • Airport staff will provide assistance until boarding the aircraft and will entrust the minor to the cabin crew who’ll be responsable for him/her for the duration of the flight;
  • The parent or guardian must remain at the airport until 30 minutes after take-off;
  • Minors will receive similar assistance upon arrival and will be assisted until reunification with the person named in the booking.

For all Italian minors travelling abroad alone, namely without his parents or legal guardian, it’s necessary to have a document named “Dichiarazione di Accompagno” (declaration of temporary guardianship for travel abroad), issued by the Police, which includes the name of the airline to which the minor is entrusted or the name of the person, who is authorized to travel with the minor.

This declaration, which is applicable only to Italian minors and only when they travel outside the national borders, with a person other than his parents or legal guardian, must be presented at the border together with a valid travel document.

For minors of other nationalities, it’s necessary to check on the website of the embassy or consulate in the destination country.
Every declaration is limited to a journey (understood as round trip) to a given destination.
