On 12 October 2025 the Entry-Exit System (EES) starts operations in all EU countries. The system is being put in place to modernise borders, make border checks easy, secure, and more efficient for travellers, and to improve European-wide security. The EES will be progressively rolled out at the external borders until 9 April 2026 and it will be fully operational at all border crossing points from 10 April 2026. According to the national implementation plan, in Italy the EES will be operational from October 12th at the airports of Fiumicino and Malpensa and from October 20th at all other airports.

 The EES allows to register non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period), each time they cross an external border of a European country. In this way, the EES will:

• Modernise and improve border management with secure and reliable electronic records and  by enabling automation at the borders.
• Improve the experience for travellers and  gradually reduce waiting times thanks to  automated border checks.
• Prevent irregular immigration, by identifying overstayers and providing reliable data on  entries, exits, and refusals of entry.
• Strengthen the Schengen area’s internal security by preventing identity and document fraud thanks to the use of biometric data, and by supporting law enforcement authorities to prevent, detect, and investigate terrorism and other serious crimes.

Il 12 ottobre 2025 è entrato in funzione in tutti i paesi dell'UE il sistema di ingresso/uscita (EES). Il sistema è stato istituito per modernizzare le frontiere, rendere i controlli frontalieri più semplici, sicuri ed efficienti per i viaggiatori e migliorare la sicurezza a livello europeo.

L'EES sarà progressivamente introdotto alle frontiere esterne fino al 9 aprile 2026 e sarà pienamente operativo in tutti i valichi di frontiera a partire dal 10 aprile 2026. Secondo il piano nazionale di attuazione, in Italia l'EES è operativo dal 12 ottobre negli aeroporti di Fiumicino e Malpensa e dal 20 ottobre lo sarà in tutti gli altri aeroporti, compreso l'aeroporto "Luigi Ridolfi" di Forlì.

L'EES consente di registrare i cittadini extracomunitari che viaggiano per un soggiorno di breve durata (massimo 90 giorni in un periodo di 180 giorni) ogni volta che attraversano una frontiera esterna di un paese europeo. In questo modo, l'EES:

Modernizzerà e migliorerà la gestione delle frontiere con registrazioni elettroniche sicure e affidabili e consentendo l'automazione alle frontiere.

Migliorerà l'esperienza dei viaggiatori e ridurrà gradualmente i tempi di attesa grazie ai controlli automatizzati alle frontiere.

Preverrà l'immigrazione irregolare, identificando i soggiorni irregolari e fornendo dati affidabili su ingressi, uscite e rifiuti di ingresso.

Rafforzerà la sicurezza interna dello spazio Schengen prevenendo le frodi relative all'identità e ai documenti grazie all'uso di dati biometrici e sostenendo le autorità di contrasto nella prevenzione, nell'individuazione e nelle indagini sul terrorismo e altri reati gravi.
